Quick answers

Skydiving licence: your questions

What is a skydiving licence in Australia, and who issues it?

Your first skydiving licence in Australia is the APF A-Licence (Certificate A), issued by the Australian Parachute Federation (APF). It lets you jump solo without an instructor. Because the APF is a member of the FAI, it's recognised at dropzones around the world.

How many jumps do I need for an A-Licence?

It's performance-based, not a fixed number. The APF minimum is 10 stable freefalls, but you also need to complete the training tables and accuracy landings. Most of our students reach their A-Licence within 20 to 25 jumps.

What do I have to pass?

All 10 AFF stages, the APF Student Training Table and Class A Canopy Handling Table (including our canopy handling course), 10 witnessed landings within 30 m of the target without help, and the A-Licence written exam.

How long does it take to get a skydiving licence?

The AFF course takes 5 days, weather permitting, then Fly With Friends takes you through to the standard. Plan on 10 to 14 days at Hillman Farm, or spread it over a few weekends. Courses start every Wednesday, all year, except our Christmas break (Monday 21 December to Tuesday 5 January).

How much does a skydiving licence cost?

The 10-stage AFF course is $3,635 including accommodation, the Fly With Friends licence package is from $5,610, and extra solo jumps are $105 each including gear hire. Fly With Friends is the best way to your licence. Here's the full cost breakdown.

What can I do with an A-Licence, and what comes next?

With an A-Licence you can jump solo, in winds up to 20 knots, at dropzones in Australia and overseas. Next is Certificate B: you complete the full B-Rel table (10 coached jumps), which you can start straight after AFF with Fly With Friends, and log 50 freefalls. B lets you freefly with others. Certificate C (100 freefalls) lets you wear a camera and jump in winds up to 25 knots, and Certificate D (200 freefalls) lets you start wingsuit flying.

Can I learn to skydive in summer in WA?

Yes. We're WA's only skydiving school offering AFF all year round, so you can start your licence in any month, including November to February.

What are the age, weight and fitness requirements?

You need to be 16 or older, and under 18s need written consent from a parent or guardian. The maximum weight for AFF is 95 kg. You don't need to do a tandem first. If you have a medical condition, call us before you book.

I've done a tandem or some AFF elsewhere. Can I finish here?

A tandem isn't needed to start AFF. If you've done some AFF elsewhere, call us with your logbook details and we'll work out where you pick up. If it's been a while since you jumped, start with our recurrency course.

Can I get my licence if I'm visiting from overseas?

Yes. Your A-Licence is issued to the APF standard and recognised at dropzones around the world. Check that your visa allows you to do the course, and see our guide for Singapore visitors.
